How do I upload my website using an FTP client

You can upload a website many ways! Depending on which server and the configuration of the server it is all about the same though.  Here is how to do so on the OCOSA Servers.

Background:

You will need an File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client to connect to the server.  One we recommend is FREE at http://filezilla-project.org This FTP client is pretty simple to use.  Simply follow the instructions on how to install it and your done.  Then type in information provided from your welcome letter or server information email into the client to connect to the server. You will need to know what a username and password is.  Also what a server name or host name is and the port of the server or host. Usually you can leave blank as we use standard port 21 for FTP.  Some sites or companies use other ports.

Directory Structure:

If you are one a linux server you will see depending on which server.

  • cgi-bin
  • conf
  • error_docs
  • httpdocs
  • httpsdocs

OR

  • .mozilla
  • domains
  • imap
  • public_html (shorcut to the domains folder to the main domain name)

Step down in the domains folder:

  • actual domain name
    • .htpasswd
    • logs
    • private_html
    • public_ftp
    • public_html (this is usually where the website goes)
    • stats

Steps:

  1. Open up FileZilla
  2. Type in your server information:
    (For example)
    1. Host: www.site.com
    2. Username: sitecom
    3. Password: 5it3!@hgw
    4. Port: Leave Blank
  3. Click Quickconnect
  4. You are not connected to the server if your server credentials are correct.
  5. On the left side of the screen within FileZilla you see a window that is connected to your local company.
  6. On the right side of the screen within FileZilla you see a window that is connected to the server showing one of the directory styles above.
  7. Upload your files to the public_html directory.
  8. That's it your done.
